Municipal Services Update: December 3, 2024

Roads

Winter maintenance will continue this evening with staff working to clear roads and sidewalks across the municipality ASAP.
Snow removal from downtown Exeter will take place tonight, December 3. Please note that snow will only be removed back to the curb line.
*Drivers: DO NOT park on the street overnight so that snow clearing activities can continue. See our Parking Bylaw for more information.
Our declaration of a Significant Weather Event is still in effect because of the extensive snow volumes. This means the standard timelines required for winter maintenance objectives are currently suspended.
It may take another 72 to 96 hours for everything to return to normal. Meanwhile, we urge everyone to exercise caution and to limit travel if it's not absolutely necessary. If you do need to travel, remember to give plows and clearing equipment space to work – stay back, slow down and please be patient.

Exeter Sidewalks

Sidewalk clearing is normally completed within 24 hours after the end of a storm; however, in situations of heavy snowfall – like now, it takes longer.
Our sidewalk machine is out and working but the accumulation is too deep for the blade to be effective. This means we’re relying on the blower, which is significantly slower. Normally, all the sidewalks in the whole town can be cleared in one day, but with only the blower we are likely looking at two days.
Here’s how you can help:
• When clearing snow and ice from your sidewalks, don’t pile it onto roadways. This is especially important for buildings fronting Main Street from Gidley to Simcoe, which are required to clear away snow and ice within 24hours under our Snow and Ice Removal Bylaw
• Clear nearby fire hydrants of accumulated snow
• Help a neighbour to clear their sidewalk :)

Landfill Site

The Landfill Site will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec 4) as per the regular schedule. We'll assess the situation on Thursday to see whether it can be reopened then - there is still a lot of snow that needs to be moved and our priority is clearing roadways.
We will continue to update on the local situation with notices on our website and social media. Thank you all for your support, patience and for working together with us!
