Project Approval
With grant funding support from Infrastructure Canada, South Huron retained R.J.Burnside & Associates (Burnside) to prepare an Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP). The goal of the ATMP is to explore ways that improve active transportation opportunities within the municipality.
Project Background
"Active transportation" is defined as human-powered travel within a community including, but not limited to, walking, cycling, inline skating, and travel with the use of mobility aids like motorized wheelchairs and other power-assisted devices moving at a comparable speed. The best connected communities offer active transportation routes for residents to travel to work, shopping centers, places of worship, schools or other key destinations.
Active transportation has many individual and community benefits, including:
- Improved fitness levels: Active transportation provides an opportunity for residents to be physically active on a regular basis. Greater opportunities for physical activity help contribute to a healthier South Huron.
- Stronger social connections: Active transportation is accessible and facilitates social interactions. Planning a well-connected active transportation and recreational trail network can build connections between communities, thereby connecting the people of South Huron.
- Improved environmental quality: Active transportation reduces reliance on motorized vehicles thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A well-connected active transportation and recreational trail network provides opportunities for non-motorized trips and reduces auto-mobile dependence.
- Positive economic affects: Active transportation routes can attract newcomers/visitors looking for enhanced quality of life and can reduce expenses on owning/operating personal vehicles.
