2022 Municipal Election
Municipal elections in Ontario are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October. The next municipal election will be held Monday, October 24, 2022. The last municipal election was held on October 22, 2018 and under the Municipal Elections Act, the four-year term of office for the current council and school board trustees began December 1, 2018, and ends November 14, 2022.

Who can vote?
If you are a resident, owner or tenant of property in Ontario, a Canadian citizen and 18 years of age or older, on the day of the Election you can vote in Ontario’s municipal and school board elections. We all play a role in ensuring a fair electoral system, and it is the responsibility of every elector to make sure their information is up-to-date and accurately reflected for electoral purposes.
Am I on the Voter’s List?
Notice Is Hereby Given that, the list of all persons entitled to be electors for municipal elections in the Municipality of South Huron has been prepared by the Clerk’s Office.
The Voter's List is a list of eligible electors who can vote in the 2022 Municipal Election. From September 1 until the close of voting on voting day (8:00 p.m., October 24), eligible electors may submit an application to have their name added to or removed from the Voter's List, or to have their information amended.
Applications can be made to:
- add or remove your name from the Voter's List; or
- correct information relating to your qualifying address or school support
between September 1, 2022 and October 21, 2022, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and October 21, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Voting Day, October 24, 2022 until 8:00 p.m. at the Municipal Office or at the locations and times noted below for the Help Desk.
To be an eligible elector, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen,18 years of age or older
- a resident of the Municipality of South Huron, an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of South Huron, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant in the Municipality of South Huron, and
- must not be prohibited from voting by law.
Proper Identification is required. For a complete list of accepted forms of identification, please visit the Election Ontario website.
Voters may inspect the list to ensure their names are on it as well as make inquiries regarding the status of their school support at the Municipal Office, 322 Main Street South, Exeter. Alternatively, Voters may call the Clerk’s Office starting September 1, 2022 during regular business hours at 519-235-0310.
How do I vote in the 2022 Municipal Election?
South Huron will be using Internet/telephone voting methods for our 2022 Municipal Election. Voters can choose to vote by phone or online - there is no paper ballot option. These voting methods will be used during the voting period from Tuesday, October 11 at 9:00 AM to Monday, October 24 at 8:00 PM. Proxy voting provisions will not be applicable at the 2022 Municipal Election. All eligible voters in South Huron will be mailed a letter before the election in 2022 that will contain:
- A Personal Identification Number (PIN) that will be used to cast your ballot (do not share your PIN with anyone!)
- A telephone number and an Internet address for voting
- A list of candidates running for office, and
- A Revision Centre telephone number to call for assistance

Accessibility
The Municipal Elections Act places responsibility on the Clerk to have regard to the needs of the electors and candidates with disabilities. Accessible customer service standards must be followed when conducting municipal elections. South Huron's election accessibility plan ensures that candidates and electors with disabilities have full and equal access to all election information and services, including the voting kiosk at the municipal office.
Important dates for 2022
- May 2, 2022: 1st day for candidates to file a nomination paper for the office of Mayor, Councillor, or School Board Trustee. Also, 1st day for an individual, corporation, or trade union to file a notice of registration as a Third Party Advertiser.
- August 19, 2022 @ 2pm: Deadline for candidates to file their nomination papers, nomination for a different office or withdrawal of nomination.
- September 1, 2022: Voters’ List available to candidates
- September 23, 2022: Final spending limits provided to candidates and registered third-party advertiser. Final self-contribution limit provided to candidates running for Mayor and Councilor (does not apply to School Board Trustee candidates)
- October 21, 2022 @ 4:30pm: Deadline for an individual, corporation, or trade union to file a notice of registration as a third-party advertiser.
- October 24, 2022: Voting Day
Important dates for 2023
- January 3, 2023: End of campaign period for candidates and third-party advertisers. Last day to file a Notice of Extension, Form 6, to continue campaigning to erase a deficit
- March 31, 2023 @ 2pm: Deadline for candidates and third-party advertisers to file the initial financial statement
- June 30, 2023: End of extended campaign period
- September 29, 2023 @ 2pm: Deadline for candidates and third-party advertisers to file the supplementary financial statement (applies only to those who extended their campaign period)
