As a result of annual seasonal recruitment, our Community Services Department is seeking to fill the roles of Seasonal Labourer – Summer Operations. Under the direction of the Foreperson of Community Services, this position is responsible for providing facility maintenance on municipal property and facilities. Responsible for all areas of municipal facilities including arenas, community halls, open spaces, parks and trails, playing fields, municipal cemeteries and Port Blake Day park. Provides assistance to the public in a friendly and professional manner while promoting the health and safety of colleagues and the public.

This position is a seasonal position that provides a great opportunity for high school and post-secondary students on their summer break.

The Ideal Candidate  

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

  • Previous exposure to buildings, parks, playfields and cemetery operations and/or maintenance is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to deal with the public with diplomacy and tact

Working Conditions

Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting upwards of 40 lbs., carrying, crawling and climbing. Operations are conducted primarily outdoors and continue in all weather. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working with equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, and tools is required. A flexible schedule is required to account for operational coverage outside of core hours, including weekends, overtime or call-in shifts.

As a Lifeguard / Swim Instructor your duty is to provide pool supervision to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. Lifeguards / Swim Instructors must be capable of providing first aid treatment where necessary. You will be responsible for the overall safety of a variety of swimmers utilizing the Exeter and Kirkton-Woodham pool facilities. Lifeguards / Swim Instructors must have the ability to effectively and efficiently protect the safety of swimmers. Other responsibilities include maintenance of the pool areas to ensure safety and ease of use. Applicants must have all appropriate certifications, including Bronze Cross designation, or National Lifeguard Certification and Standard First Aid with CPR & AED Level C.

The Ideal Candidate  

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR & AED Level C.
  • Current National Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Bronze Cross Certificate is required at a minimum to be considered for this role.
  • Current Swim Instructor Certificate is considered an asset.

The Wading Pool Attendant is responsible for supervision, accident prevention, public education and public relations to those using the pools. Monitors and controls access to the wading pool. Must have the ability to protect the safety of swimmers effectively and efficiently. You will be responsible for the care, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of Municipal facilities including arenas, community centers, fire halls, parks, pools, splash pad, playgrounds, pavilions, sports fields, cemeteries, and the Port Blake Day Park. Your role will include maintenance activities including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting, and mechanical. You will be responsible for completing daily, weekly, and annual maintenance activities and inspections of facilities, equipment and play spaces.

The ideal candidate: 

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

  •          Completion of Secondary School, preferably with a background in trades and occupations.
  •          Certification or willingness to become certified as a Facilities Operator, Pool Operator, Ice Technician, including Basic Refrigeration or Horticultural Technician
  •          First Aid, CPR and AED Level C, WHMIS and propane handling certification.
  •          Ability to maintain a valid Class G license.
  •          A working knowledge of basic building construction and maintenance, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration.
  •          Background experience and technical skills in ice making and resurfacing, refrigeration and grounds’ keeping.
  •          Exposure to building, parks, playfield and cemeteries maintenance.
  •          Ability to complete mathematical calculations for working with equipment and materials
  •          Ability to regularly lift in excess of 25 kg.

The Ideal Candidate  

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional that has the following:

·         Post-secondary education in civil engineering or a related discipline

·         A minimum of 7 years’ experience in a leadership role in a municipal roads department.

·         Thorough working knowledge of municipal government, legislation/regulations/standards, including Minimum Maintenance Standards,  and contemporary management practices.

·         Certified Roads Supervisor (CRS) designation

·         Possesses strong management and supervisory skills, record keeping, problem solving, project / time management, analytical, communication skills, both oral and written and shall exhibit excellent interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to think and act appropriately in a political and community service environment and to deal courteously and effectively with elected officials, the general public, residents, staff, other departments, corporate contacts and other levels of government.

·         Experience in writing and implementing financial policies and developing sound business processes.

·         Excellent interpersonal, project/time/records management, organizational, analytical, research, communication, presentation, problem solving, and staff leadership and supervisory skills.

·         Knowledge and experience with operational and capital budget preparation.

·         Ability to establish and assign priorities, work programs and tasks for division staff and purchased professional series and ensure that the tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner, to meet Council and established service levels and deadlines.

·         Possess a valid “G” Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract deemed satisfactory by the Municipality, a DZ or AZ license is considered an asset.

·         Proper operation, care and maintenance of departmental equipment and other resources of the Transportation Services Division.
